utu unveils AI-Powered Recommendation Engine to bridge the travel retail data divide

The engine is a new capability designed to help travel retailers master the mechanics of value conversion by translating downtown tax-free shopping activity into more relevant, higher-value sales across the passenger journey.

The Industry Challenge: The “Blind Spot”

Each year, billions in VAT refunds leave countries as lost retail opportunity. While travel retail spans airports, downtown boutiques, and cruise environments, these moments currently exist in isolation. Retailers airside often operate with a significant “blind spot” – possessing zero context of a traveller’s recent city-side spending when they walk through the terminal doors.

Closing the Information Gap

Set for a mid-2026 rollout, the utu Recommendation Engine is designed to close this gap. It activates the moment a traveller chooses to issue an utu voucher in-store, leveraging real-time signals from earlier in the journey to support a more relevant product fit.

By moving away from speculative retail, this intelligence layer arms sales teams with the precise context to move beyond generic promotions. Whether a traveller has engaged with premium luxury categories or gifting-oriented behaviour, the engine ensures that product discovery is shaped by actual activity rather than assumptions.
